Marilyn JamesMarilyn James became fascinated with painting by watching her artist brother early in her adult life. She first studied drawing at the Dayton (OH) Art Institute, followed by oil painting with Cyril Sloan in Essex, VT. Numerous workshops around the US culminated with intensive study at the Wooster School Art Center (Danbury, CT).
She is a diverse and talented artist. Over the years she has painted realistically in oil, watercolors, and now her chosen medium is water-based oil on canvas. Marilyn James’ work captures the essence of Vermont – more specifically the beautiful landscape and many species of trees that surround us in the spectacular Green Mountains. Her water-based oil paintings are a result of combining what is seen and felt, as she observes the world both “from her window” and on travels throughout the region. She uses complimentary colors in flat planes to move the viewer through the painting, defining and accentuating the shapes and patterns of light found in nature. There is a simplicity to her paintings which is a result of a conscious effort in recent years to simplify all things in life.
She comments on her current style: "A few years ago my desire to simplify life carried over into my painting. I find the freedom of letting my mind take over a chosen subject, not being tied up in details or duplication of the subject, while playing with the paint on the canvas; This was incredibly exciting, and lead me to where I am today."
